A 2004 academic paper titled "Investigation of the Effects of Hydrogen Addition on Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Diesel Engine" was published at the 2004 FISITA World Automotive Congress in Barcelona. According to the paper, experiments were carried out to evaluate the addition of HHO mixture obtained through electrochemically decomposed water to the inlet air of a single cylinder direct injection fuel engine.

Their conclusion is "when a small amount of hydrogen is added to the intake air, the combustion process of the internal combustion engines could be considerably enhanced. It was found out that the addition of hydrogen has a good influence on the combustion."
